Looking for the ultimate family movie night list? You know what I’m talking about, the absolute best list of family movie night movies to share with your kids? I was too! Last weekend, I was trying to find a fun, older movie to share with my kids. We have started a new tradition of Friday pizza and family movie night because soccer has been cancelled.
Each Friday, my husband and I try to find an older movie that we grew up with to show the kids. So far, the kids have loved them all, but I’ll be honest, I forget some of the details and have realized that the movie ratings are different than they are now.
Regardless, I’ve made up the Ultimate Family Movie Night List for you to refer to next time you find yourself at home, wanting to do Family Movie Night – which just might be sooner than you think! Plus, I’ll share the cheapest way to get your hands on the movies you love and how to make it a fun but very frugal night with your family!

Not All Movies Are Created Equal
Before we get to far into this list, I wanted to make sure that you know I don’t 100% endorse this list of movies. I like a lot of the movies on this list – some are my childhood favorites, but I didn’t make the movie, so there are many things I would probably omit from each one.
Just because the movie was created in 1980 doesn’t mean it won’t have any bad language, rude humor, or obscenities. I can’t control that part of the movies and many times, when we are watching on older movie with our kids, we are shocked at the small innuendos that are laced throughout the movie that I never picked up on as a kid.
A Small Warning
While I like this list of movies a lot and think it is the Ultimate Family Movie Night List, I can’t promise that the movie will be perfect for kids of all ages and won’t have any bad words or a small scene here and there that doesn’t need to be there. Pay close attention to the movie rating and make your own call as a parent on if you want to show the movie to your kids.
Ratings Seem Much Stricter Now
One more side note. To me, movie ratings seem much stricter now than they used to be. Which is a good thing actually, but goodness, some of the PG movies from the 1980’s and 1990’s seem like they should be PG13 instead. I’m always a little surprised that a movie I loved as a kid has as much foul language as it does. Is it just me?
WISH PLANNING A PARTY WAS A PIECE OF CAKE?
For example, I loved The Sandlot as a kid. It’s still one of my favorites and I’m not even sure why because I don’t even like baseball. I watched this movie with my kids not too long ago and I was surprised at how many cuss words were in the movie and of course, they were not needed.
I realize it’s rated PG, but still, if I could choose, I would just omit the language altogether. With the below list, just make sure you research the movie first, and check the rating before you show it to your kids. I’ve included the Ratings as well.

Phew! What a long list! Ultimate Family Movie Night List of 133 great family movies to watch! The best part, none of them are animated! I do like animated movies a lot, but I also love some of the older movies and love watching older movies with my kids for family movie night! I hope you enjoy this list and can find an older movie to watch with your family!
Frugal Ways To Watch Movies
As I write this list, I know a ton of these movies can be found streaming on Disney+. I’m not big on buying a subscription to watch movies, so we don’t t have Disney+, but with all the time we have been cooped up inside, I have my moments where I really wish we had Disney+ right now.
Because I know you like to save money as much as I do, I’d like to give you a bunch of ideas of ways to keep family movie night as frugal as possible.
Watch Movies For Free
- Rent movies from the library.
- Rent a DVD from Redbox.
- Stream from Amazon if you already have a Prime Membership.
- Borrow an actual DVD from a friend or neighbor.
- Stream from your TV provider (a lot of movies are included for free with your TV).
- Stream from Netflix.
True story – we have Netflix, but we don’t pay for it. We got a Netflix membership for free when we upgraded our cell phones last year. We get to keep our Netflix membership for the duration of our time with TMobile, which is pretty sweet, because there are a lot of great movies on there.
WISH PLANNING A PARTY WAS A PIECE OF CAKE?
I tell you that because you might be surprised how to get a lot of stuff free if you pay attention. I even think some cell phone providers are offering a year free of Disney+ right now. There is nothing wrong with getting extra stuff when you need a new cell phone – just don’t overpay for it!
Have fun with this list of great movies and make sure to share this list with your friends!
