Why You Should Host a Family Halloween Party
I’ve been there, many times. While my kids enjoy trick or treating, we often are trekking around the neighborhood in a couple feet of snow. It’s not fun for me, or them when it’s freezing, and many years, I’ve wished that we could be home, warm and cozy instead.
Then one year, my super creative mom decided to host a family Halloween dinner before we would bundle up the kids and go trick or treating. It was a fantastic idea actually and my kids, who were very young the at time, still remember the spooky food she made!
Hosting a family Halloween party at home is a fantastic idea! It’s even a great idea if your kids are younger and you aren’t ready for them to get scared by some of the over-the-top horrifying costumes that kids like to wear.
Hosting a family Halloween party is a great way to also enjoy Halloween at your own pace, especially if the weather outside is not desirable to get out in. If you are not ready to skip trick or treating, you can also host a family Halloween party after your kids are worn out from trick or treating for a while.
How to Host a Family Halloween Party in 5 Easy Steps

- Step #1: Spooky Halloween Party Food
- Step #2: Festive Halloween Decorations
- Step #3: Halloween Games & Activities

- Step #5: Halloween Party Music
Let’s take a look at each of the 5 steps it takes to host a family Halloween Party that you can do – and I promise, it won’t be that hard to put together.
Step #1: Spooky Halloween Party Food
My favorite part of hosting a family Halloween party is the food – and this is because when my mom hosted a Halloween dinner for us, it was the spooky food that it fun! The menu for the evening is simple, but delicious!
Plan your party around dinner time, and plan to make a full spooky menu that your family can dine on. In fact, the dinner can be one of the party activities you do and is a great place to start.
Halloween Party Menu
Your menu can be simple, but spooky and delicious.
First, make Pumpkin Pasta, which is a take on Alfredo pasta, but instead you use a can of Pumpkin. You can snag the recipe here – and trust me, it’s delicious.
Then, you must make Mini Mummy Pizzas! All you need is biscuit dough, string cheese, olives, and pepperoni. You can find the recipe here. I don’t know about you, but I love these version of pizza soo much!
After that, you can serve Jack-O-Lantern Cuties. Just get a bag of Cuties and draw a jack o lantern face with a black Sharpie marker on each one. Makes eating fruit better if it has a fun face drawn on it!
Then for dessert, make sure to check out our Oreo Spiders. These spiders and creepy and yummy!
And finally, serve Candy Cane Punch. All you’ll need is canned pineapple and orange soda. Trust me, it’s delicious and your entire family will love it!
Step #2: Festive Halloween Decorations
To make your family Halloween party a boo-tastic event, you’ll want to set up some very fun Halloween decorations. You don’t need to go overboard, but you can still hang up some cute decorations to make your family Halloween party a lot of fun for your family.
Choose just one room to decorate at your house. For me, I usually decorate my eat-in kitchen table area, because we usually are eating as well as playing games.
Hang up a Halloween banner. You can find a very cute and festive printable Halloween banner in my Halloween Party Bundle that you’ll just love, or you can find your own Halloween banner. It’s cute and easy to assemble and it will make your party room look festive and ready for a fun family Halloween party.
If you feel up to it, add streamers in coordinating colors to your party room too. If you have a home helium tank and want to add some black, orange, and green balloons, you can do that too. It’s up to you.
For me, when I host at-home family parties, I try to keep it easy, simple, and fun. I don’t have that much time in the day to go overboard, but I do desire to have fun with my kids and make memories with my family. I personally, think one of the best ways to do that is to have fun, easy and affordable parties – whether they are birthday parties, or just-for-fun parties.
Step #3: Halloween Games & Activities
After you enjoy fun spooky Halloween food, it’s time to enjoy some broom-tastic Halloween games and activities.
You can start by requesting that each member of your family come dressed in their favorite Halloween costume. This automatically get your party off to the best start.
Next, you can make Salt Ghosts. All you need is black construction paper, Elmer’s glue, and table salt. Draw an outline of a ghost on the black paper with Elmer’s glue.
Before the glue dries, quickly sprinkle salt liberally all over the glue. Make sure to leave some empty spots of glue for the eyes and mouth. These are super easy and fun to do and don’t cost much because there are not many materials.
Make Halloween Playdough
Next, make Halloween Playdough and play Spooky Sculpt’em. If you’ve never played any of my holiday Sculpt’em games, you are in for a treat!

You’ll enjoy making these 3 spooky playdough recipes and then playing Spooky Sculpt’em with your family.
Sculpt’em is basically like Pictionary except instead of drawing you will sculpt the item with playdough. You can play as long as you want and divide into teams too. The best part, you can save this free download and use it year after year during Halloween.
Next you can play Halloween Bingo and use candy corn candy as Bingo markers. If you don’t have any candy corns, you can use another type of small Halloween candy like M&M’s or mini marshmallows. You can find a printable Halloween BINGO game online, or you can snag my Halloween BINGO that is available inside my Halloween Party Bundle.
Step #4: Boo-tastic Halloween Costumes
Make your family Halloween party even more festive by dressing up in your favorite costume and asking your guests to the do the same. Consider the idea of dressing your entire family in matching Halloween costumes like a set of M&M’s.
All you need to do is give each family a different color of t-shirt – green, blue, red, yellow, orange, brown and then print out a M&M’s on paper and attach to the front of each shirt.
You can also hit up your local thrift store and buy all the white sheets you can find and have your entire family attend the party as a ghost. Simply place a white sheet over their head and cut out arm holes and eye holes. That’s it!
To save money in our household, we like to save costumes too and wear the same ones every few years. Nothing wrong with that!
Step #5: Halloween Party Music
Our final step in planning a family Halloween party is to play some spooky Halloween music during your party. I simply tell Alexa what to play – “Alexa, play spooky Halloween music for families” and that does it!
